In Haiti the cholera epidemic has claimed the lives of more than 250 people, but the children who are under ActionAids child sponsorship programmes have not become ill from the disease.

The Central Plateau is one of the areas that has been massively affected by cholera - more than 2000 families in Britain sponsor a child with ActionAid in this area and some other areas in Haiti.

Last January Haiti suffered severe damage as the effects of the quake that shook the country to its core, with over 300,000 tragically dead and millions families who lost their homes.

Experts suggested the cholera epidemic has as its main cause the pollution of the river Artibonite, which runs through the centre of the country and thousands of families are using the water from this river for satisfying basic needs such as sanitation and the preparation and cooking of food.
