In Concern Worldwide's latest blog post on the Haiti quake the charity reports that distribution of food, clothing, hygiene kits and shelters are only a fraction of the solution to the problem.

Following discussions with local women in focus groups it was made clear that jobs and security of future work is paramount.

One Haitian lady said: “If you work, you can have a house and not depend on others…you can eat regularly…Without work you are still a slave.”

The World Land Trust has a project partner in Paraguay, called Guyra Paraguay, who have been given an area of land in Mariscal Estigarribia, one of the largest towns in the central Chaco.

With this they plan to initiate a project called 'Sustainable Mariscal Estigarribia'. Guyra Paraguay plan to construct a small office in the town to create an institutional presence there which will be a very important step in the management of protected areas of land there.

In the east of Sri Lanka communities have been affected by severe floods. The districts of Batticaloa and Ampara in the east of Sri Lanka have been affected many times by floods in the past.

In the Ampara district the charity Practical Action are waiting for news about families who have been affected in this area.

The Batticaloa district is where this charity set up their base to work with people affected by these floods.

The charity has produced details of the amount of affected people in the three divisional secretariat divisions in the area.
