As the anniversary of one massive disaster hits us, another unfolds as severe flooding in Brazil puts children in danger of losing their lives.

The poverty charity estimates that almost 50% of the casualties from the Brazil flooding are feared to be children. Many more deaths are expected to be reported as the rain continues to beat down heavily on the south-eastern areas of Brazil.

Poverty charity Save the Children are currently on the ground and working out what the needs are so that they can help surviving children.

The aid agency reports that at least 400 lives have been lost, during the terrible landslides and flooding in the mountainous towns of Teresopolis, Nova Friburgo and Petropolis near Rio de Janeiro.

The charity has data suggesting that there are over 200,000 children living in the towns listed above who are in continued danger. Thousands of people have left their homes due to the extremely heavy rain and rocks falling on their dwellings and other structures.

Many hundreds of houses have been ruined and vast areas of land are submerged under water. Roads have been made totally unusable and bridges and damaged electric and communications lines have made the children's charities relief work all the more difficult and dangerous.
