Latest news today from the World Wildlife Fund is that the UK government has confirmed that there is funding available for the next stage of the country's CCS (carbon capture and storage) competition where companies must demonstrate their ability.

The two companies that remain in the battle - E.On and Scottish Power - will both be awarded tens of millions of pounds to further their studies in this field of specialist engineering.

WWF say that they welcome the support Scottish Power will receive as their initiative wll lead to an immediate reduction in CO2 which is being emitted from the power sector.

Unfortunately, the charity are worried about the E.On project. This is because the project may give way to a new start to a controversial proposal E.On recently put forward to construct a new plant for coal in Kingsnort, Kent - the charity oppose this.

Dr Keith Allott, head of climate change at the World Wildlife Fund said:

“Moves to demonstrate carbon capture and storage are welcome, but it is essential that this technology is tested in a way that benefits the climate from the outset and does not lock the UK into new and indefinitely polluting coal plants."
